These gold vermeil hoop earrings are based on a replica coin over 2,500 years ago of an old 'Drachma of Aegina'. Each city or state in ancient Greece had their own badge or symbol. The coin depicts a turtle, the badge of the state of Aegina, which was the symbol of Aphrodite that protected travel and sea trade. The original 540BC coin was not only the first Greek, but also European, coin used as currency of the time.
